A mindset only matters when it drives action. Winning is about what you do, not just how you think.
While mentoring a sharp young entrepreneur recently, I realized that many founders and small business owners often lack a true understanding of what it takes to be a winner. That’s why they look up to figures like Richard Branson and Mark Cuban—to grasp how successful people think.
But thinking is just the beginning. Long-term success is just as much about trusting your instincts as it is about reasoning. It’s more about building relationships than just knowing yourself. It’s more about executing on ideas than merely having them. And it’s more about taking action than simply dreaming.
Everything starts with a mindset that shapes your behavior. A mindset that drives action is the mindset of a winner. Here’s what that mindset looks like:
- If I’m Not the Best, Someone Else Is People emphasize the importance of loving what you do, but if you’re one of many doing the same thing in the same way, you won’t love the results. Passion is a good start, but to finish as a winner, you need to be the best at what you do.
- Success Is a Marathon, Not a Sprint After years of hard work as a senior executive at a startup, I left too soon to fully reap the rewards. From personal experience, I can tell you that if you can’t stick with it for the long haul, you won’t end up a winner. Success is a lifelong game.
- I Listen to Others but Only Trust My Gut Success is all about making good decisions. In today’s world, everyone has access to the same information, leveling the playing field. Surround yourself with the best people, but when you’re the boss, it’s your call. In the end, trust your instincts.
- There’s No Value in Telling People What They Want to Hear In a world where everyone seeks clicks and followers, there’s a fear of offending or being seen as negative. This leads to a flood of watered-down, feel-good content. Your real value lies in telling the truth, especially when it’s hard to hear.
- Ideas I Don’t Execute Don’t Exist Ideas are just thoughts, and everyone has them. Content is merely ideas written down, and everyone creates it. The only thing that matters is what you do—what you execute and deliver. Everything else is just vaporware.
- If Everyone’s Doing It, Run the Other Way Why would anyone aiming to be a winner get involved in areas where everyone is competing, like social media or digital marketing? If you’re using the same tools and following the same methods as everyone else, you’re just another face in the crowd.
- By Following Others, I Give Up My Chance to Lead Whether it’s a tribe, herd, pack, crowd, organization, or company, there’s always one leader at the front. You can either be that person or not. It’s okay to be a follower, but if you think you’re a leader while following others, you’re deluding yourself.
- Customers Don’t Value Concepts or Content; They Value Real, Innovative Solutions to Their Problems Business is built on one fundamental principle: selling products or services that customers need. The biggest winners are those who best solve their customers’ most significant problems. Tough Problem + Great Solution = Big Win. Never forget that equation.
- Failure Sucks People often talk about the value of failure, but that’s because failure hurts. If the pain is deep enough, it forces you to confront what went wrong, learn from it, and avoid making the same mistake again. Failure should teach you, but the goal is always to win.
- Winning Is About Action, Not Just Mindset I could list 15 or 20 more points, but the key takeaway is this: A mindset only matters when it leads to action. Winning isn’t about what you think; it’s about what you do.
