Your personal experiences, instincts, and common sense should guide your most important decisions.
I watched my parents spend decades in jobs they despised. Their unhappiness was palpable, making my childhood difficult to endure.
From a young age, I knew that whatever career I chose had to be fulfilling and enjoyable—non-negotiable. No one had to tell me this; I learned it through the harsh reality of my upbringing. Staying true to this belief has served me well, leading me down a career path that has been perfectly suited to me.
So, the question is: Are you living your life in a way that’s best for you, or are you following someone else’s expectations? Are you living your life or someone else’s?
Every day, you’re bombarded with unsolicited advice on how to live: how to succeed, how to avoid failure, which traits to embrace, and which to avoid. You’re told why you should be a morning person, take naps, behave a certain way, eat a certain way, and even how to be happy.
This can be overwhelming. So, I’m going to do you a favor and relieve some of that pressure by telling you exactly which advice to listen to and which to ignore. Ready? Here it is: Ignore all of it. Yes, I mean every bit of it.
Here’s why: Your own experiences, instincts, and common sense will guide you in making the right decisions. While there will be times when you need advice from those more experienced than you, that’s advice you seek out, not unsolicited advice.
Everyone who pushes unsolicited advice has a vested interest in you taking it. They’re motivated by self-interest, not your well-being. Therefore, you can’t fully trust it—or them.
What you can trust is yourself: your experiences, your gut feelings, and your thoughts. Your life’s outcome depends on the choices you make, and those decisions should always be in your hands, including whom you choose to listen to when seeking advice.
If that sounds intimidating, don’t worry. You have a built-in system that’s been evolving for millions of years, helping you turn your knowledge, experience, and instincts into the right answers for you. It’s called your brain.
The problem is, many of you aren’t using this system. Instead of experiencing the world and listening to your feelings, you’re letting others dictate your life. That’s simply not wise. Every decision made that way is a poor one.
Don’t misunderstand me; information and communication are valuable. But there’s such a thing as too much information and communication, and we’ve surpassed that point long ago. It’s easier to search online for answers than to experience life and think for yourself. It’s easier to blog, post, or message than to sit quietly and reflect.
We’ve become so reliant on Googling for answers and following the crowd that we’ve lost touch with our ability to think and feel for ourselves. It’s become too easy.
Every day, I see people making critical decisions based on others’ advice. Every day, I encounter content that contradicts what I’ve learned through experience. And every day, I worry for those of you who follow that noise instead of living your own life—exactly as you should.
