Building a High-Performing Team in Just 2 Years: 5 Key Strategies for Sustainable Growth

A team’s true strength lies in the unique skills of its members and how effectively they collaborate to achieve shared goals. When I took on the role of CEO in 2022, my primary objective was to create a high-performing team capable of driving the company’s success. This journey involved identifying clear goals, aligning everyone with the company’s mission, and ensuring that our 102 employees across 38 states were unified in their efforts. Like any ambitious endeavor, it was a process of trial and error, but the lessons learned were invaluable.

1. Aligning Mission, Role Clarity, and Accountability

The first critical step was to ensure that every team member understood the company’s direction and aspirations. We clarified our product-market fit, value proposition, and the milestones that are crucial to customer satisfaction. It was essential to connect each job function to the broader business goals. For instance, we regularly measure our Annual Revenue Run Rate (ARR) to align our team’s focus and ensure we’re all moving in the same direction. This approach fosters a sense of purpose and accountability, which are key drivers of performance.

2. Balancing Performance Metrics with Thoughtful Strategy

Beyond tracking ARR, we learned the importance of balancing our performance metrics. Overemphasizing one metric can lead to unintended consequences. For example, focusing solely on service quality might cause inefficiencies, while prioritizing efficiency could compromise service. Our approach has evolved to carefully analyze and balance these metrics, incentivizing behaviors that align with our core business values. This strategy has helped us achieve desired outcomes while minimizing the risk of unforeseen repercussions.

3. Fostering Intellectual Safety

Creating a work environment where team members feel safe to share ideas and challenge the status quo has been instrumental in driving our success. Intellectual safety encourages creativity, innovation, and risk-taking, allowing the team to collaborate and find unique solutions to challenges. This culture of openness boosts morale, engagement, and productivity, ultimately leading to better results for the company.

4. Preventing Burnout by Prioritizing Well-Being

To prevent burnout, I focus on maintaining my own equilibrium because, as the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” For the team, we keep our mission and goals clear, ensuring that every task has a purpose. Our dispersed work environment presents both perks and challenges. While some team members may view time tracking as micromanagement, others see it as a tool to stay focused on what matters most. Building personal connections is crucial, so we hold regular in-person meetings, monthly calls, and an annual company gathering to strengthen our sense of unity and belonging.

5. Embracing Mistakes as Learning Opportunities

Every mistake has been a stepping stone toward understanding what it truly takes to build a high-performing team. Leaders must remember that there are no shortcuts in growing a team. While it may be tempting to take the easier route or rely on a single opinion, building comprehensive training programs and gradually integrating new hires into the company culture yields better results. This approach has driven us to prioritize transparency and thoroughness in our recruitment and training processes, solidifying our reputation in the industry.

Adaptability, curiosity, and open-mindedness have become our guiding principles. Our work requires us to stay flexible and eager to learn from both successes and failures. Similarly, resilience, commitment, and an open heart are essential to building a high-performance culture that focuses on team well-being and business growth.

A company’s strength lies in its culture and people. For founders and business leaders, investing in your team is crucial. Listen to those outside your immediate circle, and approach insights with an open mind. Stay curious, embrace opportunities as they arise, and don’t shy away from learning from mistakes. Building a successful organization requires grit, resilience, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
