Life and business are all about making wise choices. It’s easier than you think.
When we’re young, life often feels like it just happens to us, with little control over what comes our way. But as we grow older, responsibility shifts from our parents to us. From that moment on, the decisions we make and the circumstances we encounter shape our lives. These two elements are closely intertwined and largely determine our future.
You’ve likely heard the saying that successful people create their own luck. This idea reflects the reality that they make smart decisions—especially when it comes to taking risks, seizing opportunities, and navigating challenges. Success, whether in business or life, boils down to making wise choices.
Since every decision stems from how we think and feel—how our brains process experiences, events, and information—learning to make smarter choices is not as complicated as it might seem. Here’s how you can do it:
Be Present in the Moment
I once shared a story about a pivotal moment in my life when an ex-girlfriend’s father took me for a ride in his Porsche to visit his startup company. There, I learned about the upcoming wave of digital electronics (this was back in the late ’70s). Looking back, I often wonder what would have happened if I hadn’t been fully engaged in that moment.
Over the years, I’ve encountered several similarly life-altering events. Had I not been paying attention, they would have slipped by unnoticed, and I wouldn’t be where I am today. It’s a sobering thought.
Trust Your Instincts
In that same example, what if that simple event hadn’t struck a chord with me? What if I hadn’t acted on it immediately, seizing the opportunity without hesitation? I might never have gone back to graduate school, entered the high-tech industry, or had the fulfilling career that followed.
When it comes to making decisions, it’s important to listen to the advice of smart, knowledgeable people. But in the end, you have to trust your instincts and make the right call. If you learn to trust your gut, you won’t hesitate when the right opportunity presents itself. And when you do hesitate, it’s often a sign that something isn’t quite right.
Think Critically
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by information, distracted by constant communication, and bombarded by endless interruptions. The more you allow yourself to be pulled in different directions, the less time and attention you have to focus on what truly matters. This can prevent you from critically evaluating the information and experiences that shape your decisions.
Let me put it another way: By prioritizing quantity over quality—whether it’s information, communication, or possessions—you sacrifice deep understanding for fleeting distractions. Instead of building a solid foundation through logical reasoning, you risk getting sidetracked by the latest trends, inspiring posts, or other superficial distractions that capture your attention.
This can make you less effective at making smart decisions. Without critical thinking tools like deductive reasoning and the scientific method, society wouldn’t have advanced as it has. We’d still be stuck in the dark ages, with no technology or progress. So take a moment to think deeply—without reaching for your phone.
Stay Sharp
Every time I see a new fad diet, miracle pill, or magical supplement claiming to make you thinner, smarter, or healthier, it drives me crazy. These products are often scams, driven by our culture’s obsession with quick fixes.
Remember, your brain is part of your body. It’s simple: eat a balanced diet, don’t overeat, and get some exercise a few times a week. If you take care of your body, your mind will follow, maintaining its sharpness as you age.
One more thing: Lately, there’s been some negative buzz about caffeine, often from questionable sources. Don’t buy into it. Caffeine is a natural stimulant that, for most people, can help you stay sharp. A cup of coffee or tea each day won’t harm you. As with anything, moderation is key.
Making smarter decisions is within your reach. By staying present, trusting your instincts, thinking critically, and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you can navigate life’s challenges with confidence and success.
